The Newton General Hospital Authority was created in February 1952 to meet the health care needs of Newton County.  The hospital opened on October 18, 1954 with a total of 36 beds. Through the years many additions and changes have occurred including in June 2001, the 103,000 square feet Knox Surgical Center opened. This spacious and ultra-modern surgical care facility offers general surgery procedures, an Endoscopy Lab, and pain management services. In 2004, Newton General Hospital changed its name to Newton Medical Center.
